Gathering overview 2012/01/29

As a community we have grown to question, argue and reason to try get to the gist of what the Bible really means, what it is really saying and how it translates to our daily lives. We sat down and shared the story of our community. Each member gave their personal take on how they experienced the road so far. The service titled, “The story of us”, opened up a realisation that the focus fell on different things for each of us. The most beautiful point in the service was when everybody shared how they journeyed with the community. Some gave a very factual account, almost like a register and a historical account of the events that took place. Others gave more of an emotional and faith based account. It all had in common that the community has grown spiritually and emotionally. What transpired from a bunch of people getting together to share the word of God, became a group of people who give so much of themselves to each other that they cannot really reason in any other way as to say they are friends. Some of the most unlikely of friendships were born within the community where people who in their normal day to day life would not have ended up being friends. The beauty of what happened in the community is that friendships have been found in the most unthinkable of places, yet it is the most probable place in the world; in relationship with Jesus.

The other interesting thing that came to light in the service was the realisation that while we journey with the Bible, the question arises of how these accounts and stories can be true.  How can this story that seems so fictional be something that is so true? Why is it that the same story that is told is two different ways, seem so different? Which one is true?

After sharing our own stories from our different perspectives, we started getting a glimpse of how the Bible was put together. How different people of the same community started putting their journey with God and the people they were involved with down in writing. We arrived at the place where we reached an acceptance and a peace regarding the Bible and our faith.

Looking back at the service I do believe that most of us made peace with a book that is 2000 years old. Most of us realised that even though we have come a long way, there is still a long way ahead of us. Instead of being filled with dread and angst of how we will do this, we are filled with an excitement. I do believe that excitement comes from God, the knowing that this journey ahead will reach into the depths of our souls and touch into the lives of others. The first time in a long time each of us realised that each of us do have a purpose and an identity. In all of that God stands as the centrepiece.
